Until 1983, a Government Savings Bank provided the Falklands with banking services. When the hostilities over the sovereignty of the Islands with Argentina ceased, Standard Chartered opened a branch in Stanley and moved into new, modern premises in the centre of the town in May 1995. It remains the only bank in the Islands.
